Farmer Ted’s Adventure Farm – Ormskirk / Lancashire

Farmer Teds, Ormskirk

Farmer Ted’s is one of the most popular farms near Liverpool for kids, and it’s easy to see why. This is a large adventure farm with so much to do that you can easily spend a full day there.

Unlike smaller petting farms, Farmer Ted’s runs full activity timetables with shows and demonstrations, meaning there’s always something happening throughout the day.

It’s also one of the more expensive farms locally, but that’s largely because of the huge range of facilities available.

The farm is very pram friendly, making it a great option for families visiting with babies or toddlers.

Farmer Ted’s also hosts a Christmas grotto each year, which is one of our favourites. I’ve written a full guide to the experience here.

Expand below for more detailed visitor information.

Animals you can see

Farmer Ted’s has a wide range of traditional farm animals including:

> Sheep and lambs

> Goats

> Pigs

> Donkeys and ponies

> Chickens

> Rabbits and smaller animals

There are often animal talks and feeding sessions scheduled throughout the day.

Play areas and activities

One of the reasons Farmer Ted’s is so popular is the sheer amount there is for children to do.

Facilities include:

> Large outdoor adventure play areas

> Indoor soft play barn

> Tractor rides

> Seasonal activities and shows

> Interactive animal encounters

Because there’s so much variety, it’s easy to spend an entire day here.

Prams and accessibility

The farm is generally very pram friendly, with good pathways between most areas and indoor spaces if the weather turns.

Food and facilities

There is a café on site offering hot food, snacks and drinks, as well as plenty of seating areas.

Facilities include:

> Toilets

> Baby changing

> Indoor play areas

> Picnic spaces

Prices and booking

Acorn Farm – Kirkby / Knowsley

Feeding animals at Acorn Farm, Kirkby

Acorn Farm in Kirkby is very different from the big adventure farms, but that’s part of what makes it special.

This is a small charity run farm, and one of the things that stood out to us was that many of the staff working there have additional needs, which adds a really lovely community feel to the place.

It’s also one of the cheapest farms near Liverpool, making it a brilliant budget friendly family day out.

When we visited, we were incredibly lucky, lambs had been born just two days earlier, and because they were born during the day visitors had actually been able to watch the birth.

The animals were all out in the fields and very playful, which made the visit feel really lively.

Expand below for more detailed visitor information.

Animals you can see

Acorn Farm has a lovely mix of animals including:

> Goats

> Sheep and lambs

> Pigs

> Donkeys

> Rabbits and guinea pigs

Visitors can also buy animal food and feed many of the animals, which younger children especially love.

Play areas and activities

There is a small children’s play area, perfect for letting kids burn off some energy after meeting the animals.

Because the farm itself is quite compact, it’s easy to explore without little legs getting too tired.

Prams and accessibility

Acorn Farm is mostly pram friendly, with flat paths around the main animal areas and facilities. Because it’s a smaller farm, everything is quite close together which makes it easy to explore with little ones.

Food and facilities

There are several practical facilities including:

> Hand washing stations around the animal areas

> Toilets

> Baby changing

> Café

The café is great value for money and offers drinks, snacks and simple meals.

There’s also a small gift shop on site.

Windmill Farm – Burscough / Lancashire

Goat at Windmill Farm, Burscough

Windmill Farm is another great family farm near Liverpool, with a really nice mix of animal encounters and activities.

There are several petting areas where children can interact with animals, including rabbits and guinea pigs that are out for visitors to meet.

One of the highlights for us was the chance to bottle feed lambs, which was such a special experience for little ones.

There’s also a reptile area where children can hold snakes, which is something a bit different from most farms.

Overall it’s a decent size farm where you can comfortably spend the day, and we found it to be very good value for money.

FAQs: Visiting farms near Liverpool with kids

Some of the best farms near Liverpool for families include Farmer Ted’s Adventure Farm in Ormskirk, Acorn Farm in Kirkby, and Windmill Farm in Burscough. Each offers something slightly different, from large adventure farm parks with play areas and shows to smaller petting farms where children can get closer to the animals.

Yes, there are several petting farms near Liverpool where children can meet animals up close. Farms like Acorn Farm and Windmill Farm allow children to interact with animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and goats, and some farms offer opportunities to feed the animals.

Smaller farms like Acorn Farm are particularly good for toddlers because they’re easy to explore and not too overwhelming. Larger adventure farms like Farmer Ted’s also work well for toddlers thanks to their soft play areas and outdoor playgrounds.

Many farms allow children to feed animals such as goats, sheep and donkeys, usually by purchasing animal feed on arrival. This is often one of the highlights for younger visitors.

Most family farms in the North West are largely pram friendly, especially around the main visitor areas. However, because they are working farms, some paths may be gravel, grassy or uneven, so a sturdy buggy is helpful.

Most families spend 2–4 hours at a farm, although larger adventure farms like Farmer Ted’s can easily fill an entire day thanks to play areas, animal encounters and scheduled shows.

It’s best to dress children in comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes, as farm visits often involve walking on grass, gravel or muddy paths. In wetter weather, wellies can be helpful.

Yes, many farms are still open in winter and can be a great day out for kids. Some farms also run seasonal events such as pumpkin picking, lamb feeding in spring, or Christmas farm experiences.
