New York with Kids: Festive Fun, Iconic Sights & Real-Life Tips

Planning a family trip to New York City? Expect dazzling skyline views, bucket-list attractions, and plenty of magical moments — especially if you’re visiting at Christmas. We spent 10 days exploring NYC with our then three-year-old (plus my aunt, who’s been to New York around 40 times!) and packed in everything from sunrise walks over Brooklyn Bridge to ice skating in Central Park and seeing the Rockettes at Radio City.

Below you’ll find all my New York blog posts — including our 4-day NYC itinerary packed with family-friendly highlights, a festive guide to Dyker Heights Christmas Lights, and an honest comparison of Summit One Vanderbilt vs The Edge to help you pick the best skyline views for your trip. Each post is filled with practical tips to make your visit smooth, budget-friendly, and truly unforgettable.

🗽 Practical Info

✈️ Getting There

Fly direct to JFK or Newark from most major UK airports. If you’re looking for deals, try flying midweek or into Newark (often cheaper and quicker through customs).

🍴 Eating Out

From $1 pizza slices to bagel breakfasts, NYC has endless affordable options. Diners and food markets like Chelsea Market or Time Out Market are perfect for casual family meals.

🏨 Where to Stay

Hotels in Midtown are great for first-timers, but for better value look at Brooklyn or Queens. Families can also save with apartment rentals in safe, quieter neighbourhoods with easy subway access.

☀️ Weather

Winters are cold (0–5°C) but magical, especially around Christmas. Summers are hot and humid (25–35°C). Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable sightseeing weather.
