Gozo may be Malta’s quieter little sister, but when it comes to beaches, it really shines. From red-sand bays to hidden rocky coves, Gozo is full of spots where families can unwind, paddle safely, and enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine. In fact visiting the beaches in Gozo is included in my top 10 things to do in Gozo.
In this guide, I’ll share the best beaches in Gozo — which ones are perfect for toddlers, which are better for older kids or adventurous swimmers, and what facilities you’ll find nearby.

👉 Is Gozo Worth Visiting? Honest Family Review
But if you’ve already got Gozo locked in and just want to know where to soak up the sun with your little ones, here’s our guide to the best beaches in Gozo. If you’re unsure how to get to Gozo from Malta, this guide will help with ferries and how to book them.
What to Expect from Gozo Beaches
Gozo’s beaches are a little different to the wide, sandy stretches you might picture elsewhere in the Mediterranean. While you’ll find gems like Ramla Bay with its famous red-golden sand, many of Gozo’s beaches are smaller coves with pebbles or flat rocks leading into crystal-clear water. This makes them perfect for snorkelling and exploring, though some are less pram-friendly. Facilities vary — the larger bays often have cafés, toilets, and sunbeds, while the more secluded spots are simple and unspoilt. If you’re travelling with children, you’ll want to mix days at the sandy family favourites with shorter stops at Gozo’s quieter coves.
Must-Visit Gozo Beaches
If you only have time for a few stops, make sure Ramla Bay, Xlendi Bay, and Hondoq ir-Rummien are on your list. Ramla is the island’s showstopper with its striking red sand, Xlendi offers calm, shallow waters ideal for little ones, and Hondoq combines family-friendly swimming with incredible views across to Comino. These three beaches give you the perfect taste of Gozo’s variety.
Ramla Bay – Gozo’s Famous Red Sand Beach
If you’ve seen photos of Gozo beaches, chances are it was Ramla Bay. Known for its unusual golden-red sand, this wide beach is ideal for families.
My daughter loved this beach and we had great day swimming in the warm sea waters in July.

Why families love it: Shallow entry, plenty of space for sandcastles, and lifeguards on duty in summer.
Facilities: Sunbeds, umbrellas, snack kiosks, toilets, and parking close by.
Top tip: It can get busy on weekends, so arrive early for the best spot.
San Blas Bay – The Secluded Sister
Tucked away just along the coast from Ramla, San Blas Bay is smaller, quieter, and a bit harder to reach (the walk down is steep).
Why families love it: Soft sand and calmer vibes.
Facilities: Limited — a small beach bar and sunbeds.
Good to know: It’s not as pram-friendly, but older kids who can manage the walk will love the adventure.
Marsalforn Bay – Town Beach Convenience
Right in the heart of Gozo’s popular resort town, Marsalforn Bay is small but convenient.
Why families love it: You’re never far from restaurants, cafés, and ice cream stops. Perfect for a quick dip after exploring.
Facilities: Everything you’d expect from a town beach.
Good to know: It’s not the most beautiful beach, but great if you’re based nearby.
Xlendi Bay – Shallow Lagoon for Little Ones
Xlendi Bay is a picturesque spot with a sandy patch at the shoreline and shallow waters that stretch out safely.
Why families love it: Calm lagoon-style swimming, with plenty of restaurants overlooking the bay.
Facilities: Cafés, toilets, boat hire, and parking.
Top tip: Head up the coastal path for incredible views.
Dahlet Qorrot – Local Hidden Gem
If you’re after something quieter, Dahlet Qorrot is a small pebble bay used mostly by fishermen.
Why families love it: Peaceful atmosphere and clear waters for snorkelling.
Facilities: Limited — just a small café.
Good to know: Best for a short stop rather than a full beach day.
Hondoq ir-Rummien – Calm Waters with a View
Located near Qala where we stayed, this was our local beach and we loved it. Hondoq ir-Rummien is a mix of sandy patches and flat rocks with easy sea access. It’s popular with locals and has crystal-clear waters.

Why families love it: Calm swimming areas, great snorkelling, and a fun playground nearby.
Facilities: Toilets, a snack bar, and plenty of parking.
Top tip: Stay until evening for a stunning sunset over Comino and the Blue Lagoon.
Tips for Visiting Gozo Beaches with Kids
Getting around: Gozo is small, but hiring a car makes it easier to reach beaches spread across the island.
Shade: Many beaches have limited natural shade — a pop-up tent or umbrella is a lifesaver.
Shoes: Some beaches are rocky; water shoes make paddling safer for little ones.
Timing: Weekdays are quieter; weekends can get crowded with locals.
What to Pack for Beach Days in Gozo (With Kids)
Packing smart can make Gozo beach days so much easier — especially when little ones are in tow. Here are a few essentials to bring along:
Sun protection: High-factor sunscreen, UV swimwear, hats, and sunglasses are must-haves under the Maltese sun.
Shade: A lightweight pop-up beach tent or umbrella is a lifesaver, as many beaches have little natural shade.
Water shoes: Some beaches are rocky or pebbly, so water shoes help protect little feet.
Snacks & drinks: Not every beach has a café, so bring a picnic, plenty of water, and a few treats.
Beach toys: Buckets, spades, and inflatables keep kids entertained at sandy spots like Ramla Bay.
Swim nappies & wipes: If you’re travelling with toddlers or babies, pack extras.
Lightweight stroller or carrier: A pram is handy for bigger bays, but a carrier is easier for reaching secluded coves.
Spare clothes & towels: Quick-dry towels and a change of clothes make the trip home much more comfortable.
Muslin cloths or UV shade – for impromptu naps on the sand
Final Thoughts: Are Gozo Beaches Worth It?
Absolutely. While Gozo may not have as many sandy stretches as larger islands, its beaches are full of character. From the iconic red sands of Ramla Bay to the shallow waters of Xlendi, there’s a beach to suit every family.
If you’re looking for a relaxed Mediterranean escape with safe swimming, soft sand, and a touch of adventure, Gozo’s beaches are the perfect match.
